The Ashton story continues as the Second World War rages on. Their sons Robert, David and Phillip are all abroad while the remaining members of the Ashton household struggle with their lives at home.

Edwin is finally standing up to his brother-in-law Sefton and his confidence is buoyed by a job offer from a rival company. He has a frank discussion with Jean about their past.
